How Addiction Impacts Men and Women Differently

Addiction can happen to anyone, regardless of their sex, but everyone’s addiction is unique. Men and women often encounter different challenges as they work on getting sober. While men are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol, recovery tends to be more complicated for a few reasons, including:

  • Drugs and alcohol are metabolized more quickly in women, meaning an addiction can develop more quickly
  • They are more likely to experience more addiction-related mental health problems than men
  • Often need different types of support
  • Women are more likely to relapse

Challenges Women Face When Entering Rehab

Unfortunately, women are less likely to enter rehab because they face some tough challenges that make it hard to make the time to devote to their sobriety. These challenges include:

  • Finding someone to care for their children so they can dedicate time to rehab
  • Addicts are more likely to have a partner whose abusive behavior prevents them from getting addiction help
  • Depression and anxiety occur more often in women than in men, requiring dual diagnosis treatment
  • They are often caretakers for their elderly relatives

The most common reason women do not seek help for their addiction is that they are the primary caregiver for their children and fear that their inability to find reliable childcare could result in losing custody. The good news is, female-only rehab programs can help patients navigate these issues.

Benefits of Women’s Addiction Treatment

While there are many individuals that are comfortable with co-ed addiction treatment programs, many women benefit greatly from gender-specific programs.

Safe Place for Abuse Victims

Whether you are the victim of sexual assault, domestic violence, or other traumas, it may not be as easy for you to open up when both genders are present. It is not uncommon for abused women to not trust any males this soon into their recovery journey. A setting with only females present allows the opportunity to be truthful and more vulnerable, making it easier to start the healing.

Gender-Specific Topics

When you enter into a gender-specific rehab program, the topics within your group discussions are often issues that impact women more frequently. These subjects can include self-image, eating disorders, parenting, and more. These subjects are often discussed in co-ed and male-only rehabs, but they are issues that affect women more.

Dual-Diagnosis Treatment

There are some mental health disorders that impact women more often than they do men. This can include bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and depression. When you choose to attend a women-only rehab program, you get the focused and individualized care that you deserve.

Frequently Asked Questions About Detoxification

What happens during your detox program?

When you first arrive our medical will screen your physical and mental health. We’ll take blood tests to determine the amount of drugs in your body, ask you questions regarding your history of substance abuse, get an understanding of any potential mental health issues, and discuss your psychiatric history. We get you settled in, start your medical protocols, and vigilantly monitor your progress. The preliminary evaluations are crucial for determining the type of detox protocols that we’ll apply.

How long does the detox process take?

The process typically takes 2-7 days, but it can take longer depending on the substance you are detoxing from. If the substance abuse process was severe, it can take several weeks.

Is detoxing at home dangerous?

Very dangerous. Admitting yourself into a quality drug addiction treatment center is the best way to safely detox from drugs and alcohol. Detoxing at home can be dangerous because you won’t be medically supervised, nor will you have access to comfort medications. Due to medical variability, we cannot guarantee complete safety, but it is far safer to detox in a clinical environment than at your home.

Common Types Of Treatment Programs For Women

When searching for women’s addiction treatment programs, you are going to see three types that are the most common. There are additional types of programs that may be integrated as part of the overall treatment plan, but they will largely be part of the aftercare and continued care that women in recovery will use to strengthen their recovery and overall resilience.

Below is more information about these types of treatment programs, as well as what you can expect from each. Each one will have a level of commitment needed to make it viable, and in the early stages of recovery, that commitment can be relatively substantial, including living at the treatment center for a time.

Detox

One of the most common options used for effective alcohol rehab for women is a detox program. This is a short-term residential program where the patient checks into the facility and stays there during the entire detox and acute withdrawal stage. For many women, this is one of the most crucial components to a lasting recovery, because, without a safe and supportive detox environment, many women will relapse before completing this stage.

During detox, you will live at the treatment facility full-time. This will allow you to be medically monitored to ensure that you are as safe as possible during your detox, which is particularly important for those recovering from long-term alcohol abuse or significant amounts of heavy drinking, which may make the detox process far more challenging and medically complex.

Once the detox stage has been completed, and the majority of the physical withdrawal symptoms have faded, often around 7-10 days after beginning, the patient will be evaluated to ensure they are ready to transition to the next stage of recovery. In some cases, an additional period may be required before the patient is ready to be checked out.

Inpatient

Inpatient treatment is generally separated into short-term and long-term inpatient programs, there is no difference in the programming, but the length of time needed to complete various milestones in treatment may vary from one person to another.

During inpatient treatment, the patient will live at the treatment facility, eating all meals there, as well as sleeping there. Each day will be filled with therapy activities, individual and group counseling, and other addiction education. The goal of inpatient treatment is to allow the patient to fully focus on their recovery and to create the mental and emotional toolkit needed to help them navigate triggers and avoid relapse once they leave the center.

Outpatient

Outpatient programs are one of the most versatile and customizable treatment programs available. There are a number of benefits to outpatient treatment, as well as a few drawbacks, depending on the patient’s treatment needs. The most basic outpatient treatment will generally see the patient travel to the treatment center once a week for a few hours, during which they may participate in counseling, group sessions, or anything else offered.

More intensive outpatient programs will have a larger time commitment required from the patient. Intensive outpatient programs might see the patient travel to the center 3-4 times per week, for several hours of treatment and activities each visit. The needs of the patient and the determinations made by their clinicians will largely determine the program specifics.

Trauma-Informed Treatment

The devastating truth is that most addictions are born out of trauma. The various traumatic events in a person’s life can heavily impact their future and how they react to various stimuli. There are a number of treatments that address trauma, such as:

  • CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy)
  • DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy)
  • EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing)
  • Existential therapy
  • Family therapy program for women
  • Gestalt
  • Narrative therapy
  • Nutritional therapy
  • Psychodynamic
  • Solution-focused and person-centered techniques
  • Women’s experimental therapy

Other programs available in women’s rehab centers in Los Angeles include:

  • Addiction aftercare
  • Dual diagnosis treatment
  • Intensive outpatient programs
  • Outpatient drug rehab
  • Sober living program
  • Telehealth rehab program
