Benzo Detox

Our Los Angeles Benzodiazepines Detox

Benzodiazepines, often called benzos for short, are often prescribed to treat short-term anxiety and insomnia. Although benzodiazepine medications can help individuals live a healthy life when used as directed, the substances are addictive and lead to serious addiction.

In the United States, it is estimated that 30.5 million people use benzodiazepines. Of this population, about 2% of them suffer from benzodiazepine use disorder. Benzodiazepine use disorder occurs whenever individuals are addicted and dependent upon the substance.

The addictive nature of benzodiazepines is due to how the substance works. Benzodiazepines reduce symptoms by focusing on the central nervous system. The result is feelings of relaxation that can help reduce symptoms of panic or anxiety.

Because of the relaxing sensations associated with benzodiazepine use, the substances become addictive fast. After using benzos for just three to four weeks, you can become addicted to the substance and experience withdrawal symptoms whenever you stop taking the drug.

Withdrawing from benzodiazepine medications is incredibly severe and dangerous. The symptoms are super painful, and many individuals shortly relapse when attempting benzo detox on their own. Electing help from a benzodiazepine detox center can make the process less painful and more efficient.

How Long Does It Take to Detox From Benzos?

Benzodiazepine substances are highly addictive. Some of the most common benzos include alprazolam, diazepam, clonazepam, and lorazepam. Some brand names include Xanax, Klonopin, and Valium. These medications are normally only prescribed for short-term treatment because they can become addictive in just three to four weeks of regular use.

Once your body is dependent on the substance, you will experience withdrawals whenever you stop the substance. The longevity and severity of your withdrawal will depend on several factors, such as your dosage, duration of use, underline mental health conditions, and any other used substances.

Unfortunately, withdrawal symptoms for benzos are incredibly severe and longer lasting than many other substances. For benzo withdrawal, the symptoms are typically separated into two categories: acute withdrawal and protracted withdrawal.

Acute Withdrawal

Acute withdrawal occurs whenever you first stop taking the benzos. These symptoms are the most severe. You may experience symptoms as soon as 24 hours after your last use, but symptoms normally spike 5 to 28 days after your last use. In some cases, acute withdrawal can last for several months.

Some common symptoms experienced during acute withdrawal include:

  • Trouble concentrating
  • Physical aches and pains
  • Hyperventilation
  • Anorexia
  • Sweating
  • Depression
  • Panic attacks
  • Insomnia
  • Grand mal seizures
  • Hallucinations or delusions
  • Vomiting
  • Anxiety attacks
  • Weight loss
  • Abnormal sensations
  • Detachment from reality
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Nausea
  • Muscle spasms

The severity of acute withdrawal symptoms depends on the extent of your usage.

Protracted Withdrawal

Most immediate symptoms subside after the acute withdrawal phase has ended. However, some side effects may linger. It is estimated that 10% to 25% of individuals with benzo use disorder have withdrawal symptoms that last for a year or longer. Individuals who suffer from withdrawals for this long experience protracted withdrawal.

The most common symptoms associated with protracted withdrawal include:

  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Poor concentration
  • Depression
  • Mood swings
  • Loss of sex drive

The Benefits of Going to a Detox Center for Benzodiazepines

If you or a loved one is suffering from benzo addiction, contact a benzo detox center right away. A benzodiazepine detox center is equipped to help you make it through the entire detox process, including acute withdrawal and protracted withdrawal. These facilities can also help you receive treatment for long-term recovery.

Dangers of Detoxing Alone

Many individuals who suffer from substance use disorder believe that they can overcome their addiction by themselves. As a result, they attempt to detox with the cold turkey approach. Detoxing alone, especially when detoxing from benzodiazepines, is incredibly dangerous and ineffective.

Because of the severity and length of withdrawal symptoms, many individuals relapse shortly after stopping the drug, rendering the detox completely ineffective. More dangerous is the fact that many individuals overdose during their relapse. Overdose occurs whenever individuals overestimate the amount of the substance they need to soothe their withdrawal symptoms.

Needless to say, detoxing from benzos alone is incredibly dangerous and ineffective. Although you might think that you can white knuckle your benzo detox, doing so is not recommended. Instead, contact a benzodiazepine detox center that will be there with you throughout the process.
